Mirabai Chanu, India’s top female weightlifter, has won the country’s first medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Chanu’s silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics ended India’s 21-year wait for a medal in weightlifting and gave the country its first medal. In the women’s 49kg category, she took silver in the clean and jerk. Hau Zhihu of China won the gold medal.

Mirabai Chanu won silver
Mirabai Chanu, an Indian weightlifter, had to settle for silver after lifting 117 kg in her final attempt. In her second attempt, she lifted 115 kilogrammes. However, she was only able to lift 110 kg on her first attempt. Karnam Malleswari had previously won a bronze medal in weightlifting for India at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Hou Zhihui of China, on the other hand, lifted a total of 210 kg (94 kg + 116 kg) to win gold. Aisha Windi Kentika of Indonesia took bronze with a total lift of 194 kg (84 kg + 110 kg). In 2017, Mirabai was crowned champion of the Weightlifting Championship (48 kg). In April of this year, he won the title by lifting an 86 kg snatch and a world record 119 kg weight.
He was awarded the bronze medal after lifting a total of 205 kilogrammes. Mirabai‘s performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics was disappointing, so the medal is significant. Mirabai, the only weightlifter to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, failed to qualify in any of her three clean-and-jerk attempts in Rio, lowering her overall weight to 48kg.
He made a comeback and silenced his critics by winning gold medals at the 2017 World Championships and the Commonwealth Games a year later, after a disappointing performance five years ago.
