High stress prevailed at Ramatheertham at Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday as pioneers of ruling and opposition parties resorted to protests and counter protests over desecration of an idol of Shri Ram in Sita Lakshmana Kodandarama temple. The region around the mountain shrine was rocked by unrest while further police force was hurried to avoid any untoward event.

Critics of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) sought permission to move up Bodikonda hillock after pioneers of judgment YSRCP visited the temple to observe that the desecrated idol. When YSRCP MP Vijay Sai Reddy along with other leaders of the ruling party coming down the mountain, leaders and employees of opposition parties that had accumulated there raised slogans.
At one point, supporters of those 3 parties almost came to blows. Police had a difficult period in escorting him and other YSRCP leaders to security. BJP leaders, who had been on hunger strike downhill, raised an objection to the trip by the ruling party leaders into the temple. They stated the YSRCP leaders hadn’t any right to go to the temple since the government has failed to guard the temples.
Meanwhile, the police attempted to prevent TDP president and president of resistance N. Chandrababu Naidu along with other party leaders on their way to Ramatheertham. The former chief minister, that flew to Visakhapatnam in Vijayawada, left Ramatheertham by street along former deputy chief minister Chinnarajappa along with many others. However, since the convoy reached Vizianagaram, authorities stopped them.
Naidu and Chinnarajappa got down out of their vehicles sat on the path to stage a demonstration against the police’s actions. The authorities later let them move to Ramatheertham.
The priests of this early temple on Tuesday discovered the doors broken. The idol in the sanctum sanctorum was desecrated and the severed head part of the idol was recovered by a nearby pond the following day. Police formed five groups to nab the culprits.
Even the desecration, the most up-to-date in a string of events in the nation, triggered public outrage. The opposition parties directed the YSRCP authorities and alleged that its inaction revealed its tacit support.

The events also resulted in a war of words. Vijay Sai Reddy alleged Saturday that the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his followers were supporting the Ramatheertham event. He alleged that the TDP leaders have resorted into the action to malign YSRCP authorities.
He pointed out that TDP leader and former minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju remains the chairman of this temple board. Cabinet minister Botcha Satyanarayana slammed the BJP for creating baseless allegations against the authorities for political advantage.
Shri Ram is a prominent deity and considered as incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
There are a series of episodes of temple vandalism in Andhra Pradesh. In September as well, a’Nandi’ idol was allegedly vandalised at a temple at Chittoor district. The Police had alleged that the vandals had broken open the idol predicated on rumours that gold was poured in the Nandi idol. On finding nothing, the guys left the temple. Moreover, a 62-year-old heritage chariot parked at historical Antarvedi Lakshmi Narasimha Temple assumptions was found burnt in suspicious circumstances with the resistance alleging a conspiracy behind the chariot fire.
