Two Naxals held in Petha village, two surrender

GADCHIROLI police arrested two Naxals who carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh on their head, from a remote village in Etapalli tehsil. Two other Naxalites have surrendered before the police.

The police arrested Sanjay Atla, 23 and Rammi Halami, 22, from Petha village in the jurisdiction of Halewara police station when they had come to the village. “We had information about their coming to the village. So we planned an operation and arrested them,” said Superintendent of Police Sandip Patil. According to a press note issued by Gadchiroli police, the two were members of Company dalam 10 and were involved in serious crimes including attack on police.

Two other Naxalites, Aruna Narote, 22 and Sainath Katiya surrendered before the police recently. They were members of Company dalam 14, the press note said.

Last month, Aruna was to accompany Umesh Mattami, who was kidnapped and later murdered by Naxalites last week, in Etapalli. Mattami had gone to the village to fetch her last month on her request after she expressed her wish to surrender. Mattami, however, had an altercation with some villagers, who roughed him up before handing him over to Naxalites. He was found dead last week. Naxals left a note near his body.

“When we enquired with the villagers, they told us he had misbehaved with some village women and they handed him over to his parents living in nearby village, but investigations have shown that the parents never received Mattami. We are initiating action against some suspicious villagers, who we suspect are Naxal supporters,” SP Patil said.
